Today I heard one of my favorite holiday songs. It is called "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid. It first came out in 1984. It is hard to believe it has been that long. There are so many great things about this song. It brought together an incredible and diverse collection of British musicians, giving their time for a good cause. It was a catalyst for huge music based awareness and fundraising events in years to come. It continues to remind people of the plight of the African people every time it is played. But beyond all of that, it is simply a powerful and lyrical song. I love how they melody bounces from one rock icon to the next...Sting, Bono, Paul Young, Phil Collins...I think the only one missing is Eric Clapton. Another great holiday classic, if you can catch it, is The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth by Bing Crosby and David Bowie. I cannot imagine a more unlikely duo, yet it is incredible. Perfect. Watching the video footage of it is even better... such a juxtaposition....
Please remember to do something to help those less fortunate this holiday season, either locally, nationally or abroad.
